Community Demonstration Highlights Oxford Street's Critical Role

Community Demonstration Highlights Oxford Street's Critical Role

On 14 December 2025, members of The Paddington Project gathered at the intersection of Oxford Street and Oatley Road to demonstrate the traffic impacts they believe will result from the proposed Oxford Street East Cycleway.

The demonstration focused on one of the community's primary concerns: the removal of key right-turn movements and the resulting traffic displacement into surrounding residential streets. Residents, business owners and supporters came together to highlight what they see as significant risks to accessibility, congestion and local amenity.

The event attracted media interest and provided an opportunity to explain the community's concerns directly to journalists and the public.

Later that same day, Sydney was shaken by the tragic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach. As emergency services rushed to the scene, Oxford Street became one of the key arterial routes carrying police, ambulance and other first responders towards the eastern suburbs. Like all Sydneysiders, our thoughts were with the victims, their families and everyone affected by that horrific event.

The events of that day also reinforced one of the central concerns consistently raised by residents throughout this campaign: the importance of maintaining Oxford Street as a functioning transport corridor capable of supporting emergency response when it matters most.
